Introduction
Elder abuse is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.
Challenge
Our client was supported to make a referral to the Essex-wide domestic abuse helpline, COMPASS. COMPASS spoke with our client completing an initial assessment and provided immediate safety planning, referring onto Safe Steps for ongoing support. He was allocated an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) who worked with him creating an individualised safety and support plan.
Our client was experiencing verbal, emotional and physical abuse from his stepson which had been going on for a number of years. Following the passing of our client’s wife, there was a will which stipulated that he was to remain living in the home and instructed the stepson not to sell the house. Unfortunately, this escalated the abusive behaviours.
Obtaining legal guidance around the will and our clients’ rights proved to be a challenge.
Solution
The Police became involved following an incident, and bail conditions were implemented preventing the stepson in making contact with our client. At this stage, although our client felt safer, his mental and emotional wellbeing was affected.
The IDVA provided ongoing emotional support and helped our client engage with the Police and access legal services. Additionally, the IDVA identified and discussed local support groups to help build his social network. The safety and support plan were regularly reviewed to ensure he was informed of all available options.
Results
The stepson pleaded guilty to all charges and received a fine along with a community order. Since then, our client has had no further contact from him.
